Motif Crochet Knitting Without Breaking Rope / Blouse, Shawl

If you’re looking to create motifs in crochet without breaking the yarn for a seamless project like a blouse or shawl, here are some tips and instructions. This method is often referred to as “join-as-you-go” or “continuous join” and is commonly used for projects where you want a continuous piece without cutting and reattaching the yarn.

Let’s use a simple motif, such as a granny square, as an example. In this case, we’ll create a basic granny square motif.

Instructions:

Granny Square:

  1. Start with a Magic Ring:
    • Create a magic ring and chain 3 (counts as your first double crochet).
  2. Round 1:
    • Work 2 double crochets into the ring.
    • Chain 2.
    • Work 3 double crochets into the ring, chain 2. Repeat from * to * two more times.
    • Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-3.

  1. Round 2:
    • Slip stitch to the next 2 stitches and into the corner chain-2 space.
    • Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), work 2 double crochets into the same corner space.
    • Chain 2.
    • Work 3 double crochets into the same corner space, chain 2. Repeat from * to * in each corner around.
    • Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain-3.
  2. Continuous Join:
    • Instead of fastening off, continue with the join-as-you-go method.
    • Slip stitch to the next 2 stitches and into the corner chain-2 space.
    • Chain 3, work 2 double crochets into the same corner space.
    • Continue working in pattern (3 double crochets in each corner, chain 2) for each round, slipping stitches and joining as you go.

  1. Continue:
    • Keep repeating Round 4 until your square reaches the desired size.

Finishing:

  • Once your motif reaches the desired size, you can fasten off and weave in the ends.

This join-as-you-go method creates a seamless connection between motifs, allowing you to build your project without cutting the yarn at each motif. You can adapt this technique to other motif patterns and adjust the size and design according to your preferences.
