Easy Baby Vest Knitting Pattern for Beginners

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (choose a soft and baby-friendly yarn)
  • Size 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Buttons for closure

Sizes: Newborn (3-6 months, 6-12 months)

Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Abbreviations:

  • K: knit
  • P: purl
  • K2tog: knit two stitches together

Pattern:

Back: Cast on 36 (40, 44) stitches.

Row 1 (Right side): Knit all stitches.

Row 2 (Wrong side): Purl all stitches.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures 5 (6, 7) inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a wrong-side row.

Shape Armholes: Bind off 2 (3, 4) stitches at the beginning of the next two rows.

Continue in pattern until the piece measures 8 (9, 10) inches from the cast-on edge, ending with a wrong-side row.

Shape Neck: Row 1 (Right side): K15 (17, 19), place marker, K6, bind off the next 8 (10, 12) stitches, K6, place marker, K to end.

Row 2 (Wrong side): Purl to the first marker, slip marker, P6, cast on 8 (10, 12) stitches, P6, slip marker, purl to end.

Continue in pattern, working decreases at the neck edge on every right-side row until the piece measures the same as the back to the shoulder.
